During the Civil War, Brigadier General Henry Martyn Robert was commandeered to chair what became a 14-hour meeting that ended in chaos. It was designed to develop a plan to protect New Bedford, Massachusetts from a potential Confederate naval attack. From this experience, he began a 13-year journey that resulted in the publication of his seminal book. Since 1876, it has been amended 11 times and sold over 6 million copies.
