Speaker, Melissa Torres
Thomas More wrote Utopia in 1516. It was a political commentary, a land as riddled with faults as any real place. Yet the term has taken on its own life in the past 500 years, and conveys a sense of a world with no troubles. Any Utopia is assumed to be imaginary, so we often describe our own world as its opposite: real, and therefore distopian.
What was Utopia? What is Utopia? This is a sermon about the concept of perfection, paradise, and what happens when we follow our wants to their bittersweet conclusions.
