DESCRIPTION:Title: “Ramadan: Hungry for Something More” \nSpeaker: Shariq Ghani \nWhat happens when you remove food\, water\, and distractions from sunrise to sunset for an entire month? Muslims worldwide will tell you: you finally hear yourself think\, and what you hear changes everything. \nShariq Abdul Ghani is the Executive Director of Bridges\, a multi-faith organization focused on helping people of faith become better neighbors. Beyond dialogue\, dodgeball\, and BBQs\, Bridges works with faith communities to center similarities by highlighting differences\, welcoming discomforting conversations\, and deepening relationships through intersectional projects.Shariq was appointed chairman of the City of Houston’s Food Insecurity Board and serves on the board of Jerusalem Peacebuilders. \nHe is a Senior Fellow in the American Leadership Forum (Class 62) and a Truman National Security Fellow. He completed his graduate studies in Homeland Security at The Bush School at Texas A&M and holds a master’s degree in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from Columbia University\, bringing a specialized focus on peacebuilding to his work. DESCRIPTION:Title: “Into the Thicket: The PECAN Project and an Exploration into the Ecology of Grief and Repair” \nSpeaker:  DaLyah Dee Jones \nThis talk explores the intertwined histories of the Thicket\, Black placemaking/maroonage in Deep East Texas\, and the legacies of racial terror that sought to uproot it. We trace efforts to reclaim space for repair and justice. Weaving together folklore\, oral histories\, and emerging work to quantify what is owed to Afro-Texans\, this talk asks what it means to pursue reparations as an ecological practice rooted in land\, memory\, and collective care. \nDaLyah Jones is an eighth-generation Afro-Texan born and raised behind the “Pine Curtain” of rural Deep East Texas. A cultural strategist\, journalist\, and organizer\, her work sits at the intersection of narrative power\, community repair\, and Black Southern memory. \nPreviously\, DaLyah served as program officer for the Racial Equity in Journalism Fund at Borealis Philanthropy\, director of engagement at the Texas Observer. \nHer writing and reporting have appeared in Texas Monthly\, Texas Highways Magazine\, NBC Think\, Okayplayer\, The Texas Observer\, The Guardian\, Scalawag Magazine\, and NPR member stations\, among others. \n  \nPlease stay for coffee and conversation after the service. \nChild Care will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Title:  “Journey to Assisi” \nSpeaker:  Julie Wilson \nThis past September I had the good fortune to travel to Italy with a group of seasoned and spiritually adept travelers on an exploration of some holy sites in Italy. The theme of our journey was the “Perennial Philosophy”\, the notion\, that\, at their center\, all religions hold the same values of honoring the Life Principle (aka God)\, and treating our fellow humans the way we would be treated. This group had been traveling to India for four separate journeys\, but this time\, our leader\, Phillip Goldberg\, wanted to explore Christian mysticism and one its most influential and sincere followers of Jesus\, St. Francis of Asissi. St. Francis has been very important in my spiritual development so I immediately agreed to join them. It turned out to be one of the most significant events of my life.
