Title: “A Charming Form of Government”: the role of the Citizen in a Democracy
Speaker: Melissa Torres
Democracy is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder; and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike.”
Plato, a famous hater of democracy, maintained that most voters never have enough information to cast a “good” vote. To him, good education was the most important feature of a good democracy. What do we mean when we talk about the “well-informed” voter? How has our definition of this changed, as the Internet has grown and the ability to trust information has dwindled? Let’s talk about the ideals of our system and what it means to be an active citizen in today’s Republic.
